“Motive unknown” is always suspicious. The “why” is always important, so it makes me think of 2 possibilities:
1) The Hero let power go to their head. Maybe due to frustration, or arrogance, or maybe even collaboration with the unsavory factions of the nobility, and to stop them from taking it out on the people, the Blacksmith stopped them. Maybe thinking it’s better he gains the reputation of being a Pariah, than tarnishing the reputation of the Hero, or the reputation of the class. Something the Blacksmith took to their grave, or it was covered up.
or…
2) The people in this story, are like in many others who can’t see past the tip of their own nose. Because of their admiration, “the Hero can do no wrong”, and didn’t care to even check on anyone’s motivations.
