Tsugumomo

Relatively early review, chapter 25ish, I’ve read more but it was a while ago. This long-running serial is considered a classic coming-of-age story. The people calling this child porn are mostly objecting to the nude drawings and lewd jokes of the adult non-human woman, because she is short and slender, as a consequence of having lost her magic power. Pretty much none of them are worried about the teenage boy who needs to graduate sexually, for magic reasons. You should ignore their cries, their ill-informed outrage is meaningless.

I’m not a fan of the coming-of age genre, and this is no exception. We have to learn the rules of the world along with MC, so it’s confusing for a while. The main characters act like young children, and the wacky imaginative supernatural world makes immersion even more difficult. It seems to be a fantasy aimed at both teen boys and lonely middle-aged men, and it doesn’t really hit either target well. I don’t exactly recommend, but if you do like it, you might find it epic.

Summary: Teenage boy’s life is turned upside down when he inherits new powers to police the supernatural from his mother and gains an inhuman mentor who doesn’t share human sensibilities. She must introduce him to various forms of adulthood to fully awaken his powers.
