I could easily see people being put off for not keeping up with his natural curiosity and drive and convincing him it was “gross” as he grew up and withdrew into himself and his love of learning.
Fortunately the Sage girl was able to keep up with his mind in certain aspects and allowed him to test theories in real time dungeoneering. Unfortunately she probably left home for the wider world first, being a magic user vs an enhancer class (which seems to not be highly trusted because it requires a great deal of finesse).
