My feeling is his “puppet” skill is an enchantment that takes off the normal limits, self damage but massive power boost.
He mentioned that self buffing is easier because he doesn’t have to convince the other person to accept the enchantment, so “puppet” might count as a control magic and that’s often outlawed.
