The kid is learning his dad’s trade. In the medieval times the headsman profession was typically something you inherited from your dad due to the associated stigmas. And as everything else back then – there had been a guild that had an absolute monopoly on the trade.
Now, interestingly, headsmen often also had the monopoly on collecting taxes from prostitutes. Prostitution was a legal taxable occupation back in the day, but the money was considered dirty/sinful. As the headsmen were considered as people who had nothing to lose in terms of dignity/sinful behavior – they had often been charged with going around and collecting the sort of taxes for the lord.
