Honestly, what Dazai said about how the headmaster is Atsushi’s father is messed up. Bro abused him terribly and did so many awful things to him that he should be considered his dad. at. all. but this also paints a new picture for dazai’s character. he believes that the abuse made atsushi stronger, and because of that atsushi should view him as a father figure because atsushi grew up with him. basically, dazai is also a flawed character.

Chaining Astushi up because he turned into a tiger is understandable, but all the rest was just extremely abusive violence. He was also routinely starved, lived in terrible conditions, and eventually he was abandoned on the streets with no way to survive (where the authorities would predictably track him down and kill him).
Even if you buy into the “suffering makes you stronger” mentality, these are not the actions of someone trying to help a child – more like kill him. In fact, he crushed all sense of self-worth Astushi had, making him willing to sacrifice or kill himself for the slightest reason.
Isn’t this just another case of an abuser justifying their abuse by saying they are “helping” their victim? I’m sure he was proud of Astushi’s success… but he would see it as validating his “teachings”.
