The King probably just want someone to take care of Van’s village while he requests van to go to the front lines and fix scudetto it’ll probably be faster since he can get more supply and can make better weapons and equipments from there to protect his village when he returns.
From what I understand, the King is placing the Heir under Van and cutting the father out. Pretty much, he’s placing Van in charge. Van outranks his father now, so now he’s in charge of that entire section of the border, and the father is having his influence curtailed.
There also seems to be implied criticism over Van’s treatment, with the father’s status as a warrior bring respected, but his foresight and governance being insulted.

Right in the beginning the father intended to kill van so he’s not worth much. I wonder if the king found out and is punishing him with this humiliation?
They just can’t seem to decide how the elder brother’s name is spelled.

Now THAT was a masterful bit Of Politi-Friking if I’ve ever seen it. Saved the one son from being a tool and relegated to obscurity, and neutered the Farther, all in a nice, easy conversation.
