Everyone in Sayu’s family is a coward, that’s why this went on so long. Also it really emphasizes the lack of awareness and importance placed on mental health in Japanese society. Sayu’s mother should have sought or be recommended to go to therapy immediately after her divorce. The problem festered because everyone avoided the problem for years. Truly unacceptable in all ways.
