Why in the world does the owner of the sword matter? He said his priorities, and doing it with a prototype monster-ant sword wasn’t one of them and has no reason to be one of them in this situation. Why did that suddenly start mattering?

Wow, hero has too much pride.
The goal is defeating the Halcorn, not proving an Ant Knife can kill a Halcorn.

I liked the concept of forging a weapon out of monster A so he can defeat monster B, then another weapon out of monster B to defeat monster C, and so on until the weapon equals or surpasses the sacred sword. But now it looks like monster Z showed up early and our hero is going to defeat it with sheer willpower. I don’t think I like that, not at all.

Just love the old trope of 1 milisecond glance and the MC almost dies but can argue his thesis for 4 pages but not get attacked.
