Here is my theory. He has already lost his 3 lives, only he has, each time started over without remembering it.
And we are at the last iteration. He must have already arrived at Esil several times, at least once.
On the other hand, I think that this is the first time he arrives at Beru, since he cries to see him again AND to have to fight against him.

Sung-woo stole Esil’s heart and was like “keep my place warm, brb” and then ghosted her. He even thought about it and was like “NPCs don’t deserve closure, lol”
After waiting a few years, she took a side job building his statue so she could run into him during inspections, and the ant was like, ‘yeah, no, he’s busy with his real girl’
So after waiting for six decades, his son shows up, and she’s like, ‘ok, this guy could heal my broken heart’, and he’s like, “sorry, not hungry now, brb”, and she’s like, ‘I’m not falling for this again’. So he says “naw, for reals, wait for me”, and she totally falls for it, and it breaks my heart.
It would have been kinder if he’d carved “THOT” into her forehead and then stabbed her in her heart.
I guess he was living up to his Monarch of the Dead title by casting her into purgatory for-literal-ever.
