So now we see why he offered so much (300 gold) to the mercenaries to get them to seal the deal. Then he negotiated to get back 2/3rd of it for the family heirloom swords lol. Smart negotiator! Even if the guy had kept the money, he could have fed those 2 swords to his gluttony.
