Some people may consider it kind of him to leave so Carter could retake his position – they are imbeciles.
After being held hostage/prisoner for a long time, Carter may have a lot of mental trauma and may be mentally/spiritually broken and unable to return to combat. Forcing someone who is not in their right mind to return to combat is not a favor; the body can be rehabilitated, but the spirit may never heal.
