In swordmanship, you can hit with your pommel, if MC is this strong, having a sword is nothing, a good slash or a good hit is enough. Man can break wood, they broke the sword of the first born in one shot making shrapnel, so the sword is shit, and MC didn’t know at least the extreme basics. He did have a sword through, so never in his life did he tried to use it. I’m not a genius, but why didn’t he, in is training slashed some target. Maybe he will learn how to not destroy and make projectiles with it.

Btw, 300 serf solidiers are basically 300 peasants without armour usually with just tools for weapons. Usually the first line of defense to exhaust enemy
