Prediction: The necromancer is trying to defend the world from the villagers. He’s the reason why the stories about people vanishing stopped. Charm users? I’m guessing vampires?

Some old person living alone, missing their departed partner and others will often take up necromancy, initially generating an uncontrolled zombie or zombie hoard. Then, they get more careful. Totally typical.

Narrative could go either way on this one. Either they’re being honest and the necromancer gets defeated, they’re heroes, roll credits. Or the necromancer turns out to be either innocent or doing the world a favor with their activities, plot twist makes villagers evil, etc. Then there’s also the third possibility that both parties are at fault for one reason or another, but I guess I better stop rambling and just see for myself.
