They Say I Was Born a King’s Daughter

This is the first series on this site that I found with a 2 star rating at minimum. Considering the last series that I reviewed with a 3 star rating was essentially a hot mess, I was convinced this would be more so. I was slightly surprised yet also somehow underwhelmed as well as incredibly uncomfortable all at the same time. So apologies in advanced if this seems a bit long but I gotta talk about it because I have a bit of a problem with it.

The most surprising part about this is just the theming. It is so unapologetically sexist so far. Women are essentially little more than objects and it almost seems like law to treat them as such. I guess I get what they are going for, MC reincarnates as a princess in a world where women are seen as significantly less than men and then starts changing everyone’s mind with her previous life’s knowledge and strategically wins people over. But this is still going a bit too far. There’s literally a scene where they hold some kind of party, all the women are required to sit in a small room next door to the main event, the wall between the two rooms is glass, all they are given are chairs pointed towards the glass not so they can look out towards all the men at the party but more so that they are on display. Like a group of mannequins you see behind the glass at most clothing stores. It’s all just uncomfortable to read with how meanspirited it gets too.

The story, if you can call it that, is clearly leading up to a whole “girl power” thing in the end and with the way all the characters are depicted it all feels like this was written by an early year Highschool girl who wanted to write symbolism of how women are treated in society.
I’m honestly still torn on the setting as the MC has reincarnated and it is a different world, however the technology is the exact same as the world she left (modern day) and yet everyone dresses like they’re from a medieval timeline. On one hand it’s kinda neat, a sort of alternate Earth. However it also feels kinda lazy and doesn’t really fit the theming or bring anything to the story itself. If it was set in a more medieval timeline the sexism would make a bit more sense if any at all.
Unlike a lot of other series like this that try to establish a male hierarchy, this one fails to establish any sort of reason why the world is like this. Actually, now that I think about it. 10 chapter’s in (and they’re long chapters too), they haven’t really done any sort of worldbuilding outside of a few mentions of things that get completely overlooked.

The art is adequate at best, you can still tell what’s going on and locations seem to be established well enough. Not really much to talk about there.

Character’s are hard to get a read on (MC included) as we jump forwards in time so much that we see practically no development in character from any of them. So I can’t really talk about them either.

There’s honestly a million other things I would recommend on this site before I recommend this. I can’t say it’s trash either, it’s not nearly as bad as some of the thing’s I’ve seen on here. But it’s also not good enough, it has a lack of actual good things to make up for its shortcomings. It has soft negatives and practically no positives if that makes any sense. It was very tough trying to figure out a rating for this one.
