This title began as a youkai tentacle hentai that had such an interesting story, it was rebooted as a regular manga without the sex. There is a lot of teasing, though, more in the first 20 chapters. The traditional Japanese demonic beings are drawn with a Lovecraftian vibe, but later it’s the writing that communicates the creeping horror squirming under the skin of a child-centric romance. Imagine “The Secret Garden”, but the older kids are eldritch horrors. I never felt like I knew where it was headed, which was great. The stopping point is fine but doesn’t feel like an ending. A strong recommend for those with strong stomachs.
Nota Bene: The original hentai was a shota comic, which I hate, and there are hints of that here, but it never materializes, to my relief. Still, not sure where it might go!
Summary: Orphan boy gets hot-potatoed between put-upon relatives until his irritable uncle mysteriously collapses and is hospitalized, meaning the boy gets the house to himself for a while. He peers into the sub-basement, and the abyss takes a liking to him.
