Dungeon Odyssey

Here’s the deal. People here are saying it’s unique but with all the “look at my cool unique gimmic” trash floating around, that really doesn’t matter. First is a short review, then what you can expect from this story

This is amazing. The clearly defined end point will keep it from bloat and power creep like dbz, the art is fantastic, the humor is on point, the characters aren’t amazing, but the author knows exactly how to use all of them in the best way possible. Super deep characters were never the point of this anyway.

First off the Mc: he feels clever and Ruthless, but not “LoOk At My BiG bRaIn StRaTs” way that seems unrealistic, and not cold either. It’s clear he cares about people and has good morals, but if you f with him he’s gonna burn you to the ground and sell anything that’s left for profit. He’s not a deep character with complex… Anything, really. None of the characters are. But it’s a decent level for a power fantasy.

Side characters and antagonists: like Mc, there’s not much complexity, (with or two possible exceptions) but they all feel like the author knew what they were doing with em. Example. There’s a tiger girl (animal ears style) introduced, and her role is… Cat. Like, the most derpy meme cat imaginable. Some of her early chapters had me rolling, then the author eased back once it got tired. Still a factor in the story, and her bits are always funny, but they never do another smudge meme reffrence again. On the other hand, there is pretty good payoff with one of the characters who actually had a long term plot. Just finished that section and it made me wanna write this. One thing I don’t think we’ll see anymore is the “foolish young master” you know the guy that talks down to the hero because they’re not from such and such family? Mcs fame is growing and the antagonists decided to TAKE ACTION BECAUSE THEY WERE SCARED OF HIS GROWTH. If you’re as critical of stories as me, you hate when the villain is dumb and let’s the hero run rampant early on till it’s too late. Here’s what happened: Mc took care of major threat. Villains; he’s always been lazy. (this wasn’t arrogance, a couple comments made it seem like he really was kinda lazy.) Mc takes care of second major threat. Villains; That’s actually worrysome. And he allied with the third major threat on this floor? Let’s all fight him together before he becomes too strong. RATIONALITY. One thing I should mention is that the cast is a little bloated, but the characters are simple and the ones you need to remember are all vastly different in attitude and design, so I never find it hard to remember who’s who, even after I lost this for a year.

Art and comedy: on point. It’s not gonna look like solo leveling. Sorry but I honestly like this art better. The art style is perfect for switching from a simple unique goofy scene, then going hard on the detail and looking absolutely FANTASTIC. the combat choreography is awesome too. I’ve also mentioned memes earlier in this review. The reffrences and memes are so good, and the artist isn’t afraid to change styles for a gag.

Story: it’s a slice of life with power fantasy spices. I really enjoy the slow grind of building a power base, but I think even people who prefer a faster pace will enjoy. Much of the actual management is done by the main girl, who acts as a sort of secretary and second in command. The Mc will usually drop in to oversee development, then go on quests for the broker on the surface between wars, and wars come pretty frequently.
