Isn’t the answer to every question Astushi is asking “Because that’s what Dazai taught him”?
Dazai takes one kid from a hellish background, utterly crushes whatever sense of self-worth he has left and turns him into a killing machine for the mafia. Then he abandons his student for greener pastures, where he takes in another kid but this time treats him kindly and supportively.
Why? According to Dazai: because Astushi is more powerful and therefore has more worth than Akutagawa, who is useless trash. That’s the lesson here.
