The Return of the Mythical Archmage

Review from Chapter 16 and back.

I write this not to dissuade anybody from reading it, but it’s not for me.

While the execution of the pacing and art are decent (pacing being quite straight forward and quick, art being fluid and pretty enough) it lacks depth, content, and polish.

Story wise:

The MC is very milk toast. It’s very generic “oh no, I am a victim of a magic system class struggle but now I’ve found a way to improve” but once he has his cheat system al he does is try and prove his worth to a father who has neglected him and a society that ridicules him. Around chapter 16 he says he is going to become the best mage in the world, above all mages of all towers. Why? This just feels like a pride thing without any real reason, so I jumped off the train.

I wish this had just a bit more intention in it’s characters and their relations. The step children are just generic bastards and everybody is written in the most generic way without any form of interest towards who they are.

The magic system feels lacking and lazy. It started off feeling interesting, like a further development on the ideas of The Irregular At Magic High School, but then once he finds his cheat system, all intentions of having a structure disappears. And what lacks in detail makes his own subversion of it seem more like an ass-pull. No real logic or causal feats.

Art wise:
It’s decent enough to look at, but beyond all of the fancy photoshop flares of magic, nothing has really wowed me. The movements of the characters were decent as well.

I’m going to pass on this one, but if you’re somebody who is into near future world with magic, and a MC with a secret cheat system, this might be for you.
