The Reversal of My Life as a Side Character

In short: It’s mid. Nothing wrong with enjoying it, I just didn’t.

In long: The crux of my opinion is based on the character writing. They are distractingly one dimensional. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to one dimensional characters if it’s entertaining but there’s literally no surprise or challenge for the MC. Any potential problem is either solved by introducing the solution the chapter prior or the MC somehow has already predicted exactly how everyone else is thinking, behaving, etc. It’s honestly so bad I wouldn’t be surprised if the author writes the MC as able to predict the specific wet dreams of the entire cast of Newsies from two realities down. Which is a shame because the world is actually pretty interesting and obviously had some care in its crafting.

In my opinion, which this whole comment is obviously, the story is carried by success fulfillment. Meaning success achieved vicariously through the MC, which is hard to enjoy if you don’t enjoy the character in the first place, hence my problem with the character writing. I just don’t care if this guy succeeds.

I remember having the thought that this story was written as an attempt by the author to convince himself to go outside and live his real life while ironically using this very story as an excuse not to. Except the author doesn’t give the MC any flaws to grow out of save for being too ‘ordinary’ which is immediately solved literally first chapter when he’s transported to another game world which by definition makes him unordinary in his world.

The morals of the story so far as I can tell are this; games are cool because they let a person feel special, don’t get lost in games and neglect real life, give a god a coat and she’ll grant you wishes… out of ten.
