I Returned as an FFF-Class Witch Doctor

It’s painful how easy it would be to fix this story. It’s pretty fun, visually appealing and the idea for the character is cool but it’s all overshadowed by the needlessly edgy motifs. Like the author cared more about copying tropes from popular stories than constructing one of their own.

Just using examples in the title, there is no reason the story needed him to be a returner (it adds nothing) and his job doesn’t appear bad at any point. In the same chapter it is introduced, he remarks about how it’s nearly twice as good as the next best classes.

The story progression is motivated by a death penalty that is barely addressed. Guy is abducted from his life and forced to play a game against people (who don’t know there are any stakes) by a supernatural force. He nearly dies every time he plays and isn’t phased, despite being introduced as a recluse who abandoned his family to run from his problems (another needless trope). The game doesn’t allow you to leave if you are attacked, so every second he plays he could be mobbed by a gaggle of 10 year olds screaming “LEEEEROY JENKINS” and literally murdered. Never addressed.

The final result is an mc who isn’t coherent, likeable, or relatable in the slightest. It just undoes any emotional beats it starts by changing genre every 5 seconds. Since it draws so heavily from its inspirations, no individual aspect couldn’t be made into a great story if there was any cohesion between moods or messages. A fun story about an adventurous hobbyist exploring this game to discover the neglected features in classes that are difficult to play could be great. The author is clearly a talented artist who should have just picked which story to tell before starting. Read one of the stories this rips off instead for a better time.
