A brief description of the manga Life in Another World as a Housekeeping Mage:
A-rank adventurer Alec meets Shiori, a woman with the mysterious title of “household mage.” Shiori, the low-rank magician, is able to prepare warm baths and delicious meals on their adventures with her strange use of magic, providing an all-too comfortable environment that would be unfitting to call an ordinary camp. Though she has thoroughly won over the hearts of Alec and his companions, she has a secret.
The translation is rough. It’s a barebones effort probably by someone using MTL. You’ll get sentences where the subject and the direct object are inverted so it seems like nonsense, and you have to decipher it yourself. One example is when Alec says “I’m angry” even though through context, we know it’s likely his parents or caretakers who were angry, since Shiori talks about her mom being frustrated with her just after, and the conversation is about things they did as kids.
The art is good and the story is fine, but decoding this mess is kind of a headache.
After checking further, the translation seems to improve after around chapter 20 (I’ve read to chapter 14), judging based off of both the superior “cleaning” of the previous Japanese text and integration of the new English text.
This was really nice. It says josei for strong themes, but honestly, it’s more like an edgy shojou, there’s never any real tension. Some of the plot is closer to shonen in it’s appeal. MC is likeable and pretty relatable, the story stays grounded while being a fantasy, and the magic is cool and creative (moreso in the first half). The romantic situations will give some light feels, and the supporting cast are interesting and well conceived, if sometimes hard to tell apart visually.
Woman gets isekai’d to a storybook fantasy (the place is called Storydia) and finds out she has some magic, but it’s weak and her abilities are centered on lifestyle magic. She uses cleverness and otherworld knowledge to leverage her limited abilities and find a home in her new world. But what is the tragic backstory of her arrival, and can she move past it? The rest of the story is better than that part.
I liked the characters and story and wished it went on longer. Not positive it’s over, but there is a farewell message in the last chapter. I recommend it and will probably read it again.
I was hoping for something a bit more isekai’d with awesome powers watch me in awe. This is sort of how it begins, then it turns into a sob story. Where female MC is so utterly in need of male mc kinship. I personally didn’t find the suspense that thrilling, and I found the story tended to focus more on the sob story than the fact that we have a badass maid MC.
So basically a perfect waifu
